Retro 60's License Plates Are Back

Scott Lucas | June 6, 2014 | Lifestyle Story Culture

Good news for those of you who still have private cars—California is bringing back these awesome Sixties license plates.

Under a piece of legislation written by Assemblymember Mike Gatto (from L.A., natch), the state's Department of Motor Vehicles can issue retro plates from the 50s, 60s, and 70s—but only if there's enough demand from California drivers.

Well, turns out that that the well of Baby Boomer nostalgia has yet to run dry. More than 7,500 people have signed up to pay $50 to receive the retro-styled plates, which were produced originally from 1963 to 1969.

“This is an easy way for the state to enable everyone from the backyard restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a retro-styled automobile to add that extra bit of detail for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design,” Gatto said in a statement. Though he did not go on to add how awesome the car in The Graduate was, it was implied.

The state is also offering to bring back 70s-styled plates as well, but hasn't yet seen enough interest to do it. Because those plates are freaking ugly.
