SF Is the Eighth Highest City in America

Scott Lucas | February 5, 2014 | Lifestyle Story City Life

It's not quite yet 4:20, but we're willing to spark one up in celebration a little bit early today. After all, it's not often that your city gets named the eighth highest place in America. That's according to a weighted index constructed by real estate blog Movoto, which found out pretty much exactly what you would have expected—San Francisco is one dank city.

Movoto constructed the list from looking at data from one hundred cities in seven categories: marijuana dispensaries per capita, number of residents with medical marijuana cards, head shops per capita, marijuana-related events and festivals per capita, state legality of medical marijuana, state legality of non-medical marijuana use, state decriminalization of marijuana. The first four criteria received normalized ratings from 1 to 100, whereas the final three received binary scores. The final tabulation was a weighted average across the values in the seven categories (We hate to harsh your mellow, bro, but weighted indices are the Cheetos of social science—tasty, but complete garbage.)

San Francisco actually didn't do very well in several categories: Our per capita dispensaries came in at 11th in the nation, and head shops per capita at 20th. (And while we can't for sure blame SFPD Captain Greg Corrales for our low numbers, we sure are paranoid about it.) To increase our ranking next year, San Francisco should think about several policy options, including—um, what were we talking about?

2. Colorado Springs, CO

4. San Bernadino, CA
5. Aurora, CO
