Small-town market with style to burn

Nikki Ioakimedes | June 17, 2011 | Story Best of the Bay

With the Marin Country Mart’s revamp, the women of Larkspur, Mill Valley, and Ross have finally found a worthwhile place to burn some plastic. Since its makeover, the open-air shopping center, steps from the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, has become Marin’s new spending nexus. Berkeley-based fashion designer Erica Tanov—loved for her feminine print dresses—runs an outpost a few doors down from Benjamin Eyewear, offering rare vintage frames, and a boutique by T-shirt king James Perse, which also carries his Yosemite line of paddleboards. Across the way at Malia Mills’s only Northern California location, St. Barts–bound shoppers browse coveted swimwear separates and accessories (like flower-adorned swim caps) and bring in old suits to be replicated, and the Poppy Store outfits toddlers in high-end European designs. Developer Jim Rosenfield, of the famed Brentwood Country Mart and the new Montecito Country Mart, is the brains behind this one, too, and had it designed to fit Larkspur’s scenic bayside setting. A post office and barbershop (both opening in September) and a weekly farmers’ market make the Mart more old-fashioned town market than mall. Plus, dining spots like El Huarache Loco (run by La Cocina’s Veronica Salazar) and dessert shops like Miette and, coming in August, Three Twins Ice Cream, mean it’s also an all-day destination for San Franciscans fleeing the fog. 2257 Larkspur Landing Circle, Larkspur, marincountrymart.com
