Sorry, San Francisco, We Aren't the Most-LGBT Friendly City in America

Scott Lucas | June 10, 2014 | Lifestyle Story City Life

According to consumer finance website Nerdwallet, San Francisco is not the most LGBT-friendly city in America. And if you can't trust a listicle to deliver that information, what can you trust?

The site ranked American cities along three categories: percentage of households with same-sex partners, pro-equality laws (using the HRC Municipal Equality Index), and number of LGBT-related hate crimes.

Crunching those numbers led to the conclusion that Seattle is the most gay-friendly city in the nation. (Side note: That can't possibly be true. If it were, why would Niles Crane have been in the closet for the whole run of Frasier?) San Francisco comes in at number two. Seattle has slightly a slightly higher percentage LGBT households than we do—and way fewer hate crimes per capita.

The list is heavy on West Coast cities—nine out of the top twenty—and has a few surprises. Like Jersey City, New Jersey at number eight, far ahead of number fifteen New York City. Kudos to Oakland, which comes in at number four, and—so we've heard—is a lesbian paradise.

The full list:

1. Seattle
