Style Scout: Ogling ModeWalk's Couture; Previewing Design Gallery the New Black

The art and design worlds are inherently entwined, but the symbiotic relationship has been reinforced all the more here in the weeks surrounding the opening for SFMOMA’s Cindy Sherman exhibit. Last week, couture and ready-to-wear e-retailer ModeWalk tapped into the hype with a Sherman-inspired trunk show at the McLoughlin Gallery hosted by the site's cofounders, Beatrice Pang and Henri Deshays. Around 50 attendees admired couture and ready-to-wear by a dozen Parisian designers—many of whom will be exclusive to the site this fall—including Anne Valérie Hash, Andrew Gn, Bouchra Jarrar, and Christophe Josse. Among those who came prepared to splurge, gowns by French haute couture designer Josse were a particular hit; for the less spendy among us, gold-plated brass jewelry by Hélène Zubeldia—a design alum of Chloe and Lanvin—fell into the more manageable $200-and-under range. Well-worth the close-up look, whether browsing or buying: intricate beading and opulent trim by designer Andrew Gn, as well as leather and chain-link bags by Ragazze Ornamentali.

I also recently scoped out the New Black, a 9,000-square-foot retail space and gallery slated to open in the Mission in September. The design trove will feature furniture, lighting, fashion, and accessories from over 20 firms, as well as collaborative workshop space for Steven Miller Design Studio, Figure Plant, Hazel.Wood Design Group, and Hart/Wright Architects. The preview party drew a decked-out crowd of media and industry insiders, including the dozen architects and designers who have offices on the second floor. Some highlights: Council's sculptural tables and chairs, modern chandelier lighting by Christopher Boots (this is not your grandmother’s hanging crystal), and high-end, wood cabinet-encased speakers by San Mateo's Burwell & Sons.
