The America's Cup Sports Bar On Pier 27 Is...MAMMOTH

Most San Franciscans know that the America’s Cup madness kicks off next Thursday´╗┐, but they probably have no idea just how grandiose this whole production is going to be. Not only is there a dedicated America’s Cup concert venue (where the likes of Weezer, The Lumineers, and the SF Symphony will be performing over the coming months), but there are retail areas dedicated to Puma, and Louis Vutton, private event spaces galore, and a 12,000-square-foot waterfront lounge with room for over 500 people (inside and out). I stopped by the entertainment zone yesterday to get a preview of the big bar on the water. Here’s what you have to look forward to.

The Team
Eric Rubin (Tres Agaves, Hog & Rocks) and Scott Beattie are creating the food and beverage programs for the large eating and drinking area. Although they’re calling it a pop-up bar, it is actually an enormous lounge with several bar rails throughout, offering locally sourced food and drinks with a Northern Californian theme.

The Food
The menu will include variations on Louie salads, plus tacos on handmade tortillas, 4505 Meats’ bacon-studded hot dogs, different types of sliders, and sharable dessert platters. For brunch there will be deviled eggs, breakfast sandwiches, scrambles, and sharable quiches and cheese boards.

The Drinks
Beattie’s cocktail list is long! It starts with America’s Cup-themed drinks like a Pimm’s Cup, Cumcumber Collins, and classic Pisco Sour. There are Manhattan renditions, Old Fashioneds, tequila cocktails, Negronis, and variations on a Buck (made with ginger beer.) There will also be eight beers on tap, and a selection of locally made wines. Hopefully this will appease the wide range of international drinkers headed to the bar, but Rubin is first to admit he may be calling in last minute stashes of specialty booze (amaro? grappa? ouzo?), upon request.

The Design
Contractor and design guru Karl Hasz (Hasz Construction) is overseeing the build-out and design, wherein repurposed old racing boat parts form many of the central elements: old, 24-foot sail wing bases form several bar rails, LED light fixtures overhead are wrapped in sail material, and even white leather lounge chairs are made from cross-sections of an old wing base. Hasz used to race J/105s, was a pro surfer and still windsurfs, so he really is the perfect guy for this job.

The bar space will be broken up into 12-foot pine communal tables, lounge dining areas, a private bar and lounge area called “The Cabana” (where various wine and liquor companies will host tastings), and an outdoor space with Adirondack chairs and lounge spaces, looking right at the parking spaces for 12 superyachts. The scene promises to be an international one, with tons of Europeans and New Zealanders downing cocktails as they watch the races, but it remains to be seen just how many San Franciscans will infiltrate the premises.
