The Ghost Bride

Jenna Polito | August 15, 2013 | Story

Your book is: The Ghost Bride

You stay inside and delve into The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo, a debut novel set in the Malay Peninsula in the late 19th century. It tells the story of Li Lan, a girl who becomes a “ghost bride” to the recently deceased son of a wealthy family. Eventually, Li Lan finds herself drawn into the Chinese afterlife, a shadowy parallel world where she must navigate ghost cities and spiteful spirits with the help of a mysterious guardian. Riveting, and heavily influenced by Chinese folklore and fantasy, The Ghost Bride blends historical fiction, romance, and fantasy. From the first page, you feel transported to Malacca, a port city of coconut trees and dense jungle. The thought makes you smile. Who knew the most far-flung adventure would be the one accessible from the confines of your couch?
