The Gravity of Birds

Jenna Polito | August 15, 2013 | Story

Your book is: The Gravity of Birds

You decide on Half Moon Bay, and pack Tracy Guzeman’s The Gravity of Birds to take on the trip. This solid debut novel from Guzeman, a Bay Area resident, blends mystery, psychological drama, and romance. It concerns a famous and reclusive artist named Thomas Bayber, who debuts a previously unseen painting from his youth, which depicts him and two mysterious sisters named Natalie and Alice Kessler. The artist then asks an art history professor and an art authenticator to sell the painting for him—but first, they must locate Natalie and Alice, who seem to have disappeared. Guzeman’s exploration into the nature of family secrets makes for a light, but intelligent, beach read.
