The Looker: An Asian-Inspired Zen Retreat, Minus the Flight

Whether you're overdue for some de-stressing or looking to get an early start on your holiday gift list, the Mandarin Oriental's new 8,000-square-foot spa is worth a trip downtown. The intimate four-room spa touts private showers in each of the treatment rooms and a low-lit, Asian-inspired Tea Lounge for kicking back with a magazine between appointments. The vibe is dark and swanky, decked with gold-accented wall coverings, potted orchids, and Buddhist art throughout. (Don't miss the view of 201 Sansome Street's ornate lion- and unicorn-flanked clock from the spa's couple's suite, pictured above.) The splurgy services include meticulous manicures; skin-brightening and anti-aging facials; tension-targeted massages—the 60-minute Oriental Essence works wonders on neck and shoulder knots among desk-tethered set; and customized Time Rituals, which can be tailored around a single service or a full-day pampering session. In celebration of the S.F. spa opening, from October 1 through November 16, those booking a 1 hour 20 minute body massage will receive a complimentary Quintessence Body Scrub (regularly $80) and those booking a specialized facial will receive a free Revitalizing Eye Treatment (regularly $50). Call for more details. 222 Sansome St. (near California St.), 415-276-9608; opens 10/1.
