Many a fashion designer has been called an enfant terrible at one time or another, usually after producing a particularly racy collection. But Jean Paul Gaultier truly owns the title. And now his designs—lingerie as ready-to-wear, bondage, blue-and-white-striped sailor motifs, shredded London-punk looks—are coming to a museum that’s played host to some of the most memorable fashion exhibitions in recent memory: the de Young. Come for Madonna’s conical bra but stay for the Mongolian jackets, the mermaid gowns, the Hussar collection, the couture, and the Parisian pageantry.
