'Tis the saison

When it comes to brewing, Jesse Friedman and Damian Fagan have borrowed a page from their chef friends: Keep it local and follow the seasons. In July, the two introduced their first bottling, an ale made with blackberries from Sebastopol Berry Farm. Later this month, their second release will hit the stores, this one a saison-style beer inspired by the fruit markets that line 24th Street in the Mission district. It’s made with juicy, end-of-summer plums from Twin Girls Farm, plus a bit of piloncillo, an unrefined sugar popular in Mexico that lends the brew a subtle, sweet complexity. Amarillo and Cascade hops give it a bright, tangerine-like edge. The light, tangy flavor is announced by a fragrance that hits your nose as soon as you pop the cap, promising a last taste of the summer as autumn settles in. But drink up now: Like the seasons, this limited-release beer won’t be around forever.
